i don't think so
So as i was researching for a mod west essay i had to write earlier today about how the enlightenment impacts pop culture, i came across an essay comparing Calvin and Hobbes to the movie Fight Club.
According to the author of this piece of crap essay, Edward Norton's character is a grown-up Calvin and Brad Pitt's character is Hobbes reincarnated.
I don't even know where to start.
First of all the essay creates a made-up story-line about the time in between the cartoon and the movie, and what spawned Hobbes' tragic demise asa tiger and triumphant return as a bad-ass.
The essay points out several similarities, that are either too broad or too vague, between the cartoon and the movie. And although claiming to be a Calvin and Hobbes fan, the author has absolutely no respect for Bill Watterson's work and should be ashamed for ever having made up this rediculous theory. He should've just let the cartoon be what it is, and not have over analyzed the movie. which by the way is a good movie, with an ORIGINAL story.
if you wanna read it, it's here: http://metaphilm.com/philm.php?id=29_0_2_0
My rant for the day.

stolen clothes
so between making christmas cards, and school, and having to redo a commission, i've been really busy. I 'm gonna really love the christmas break.
I recently got a copy of the Tenth Anniversary Calvin and Hobbes collection. It's really cool cuz there's an original introduction and conclusion by Bill Watterson, plus captions underneath some comics explaining the inspiration, or why it was drawn. It's really helpful for a couple of projects, AND my life's ambition because Watterson's words are words to live and die by if you're a cartoonist.
And if you've got $200 lying around, or under the couch cushions, the complete Calvin and Hobbes box set compiles every strip ever printed into three hardcover volumes. It weighs literally like 30 pounds, and can be found at most bookstores. I hear Costco's got it for $119, so i might pick it up there after christmas.

Also, if any of you have a comic book fan on your christmas list this year, or you're one yourself, Fantagraphic Books has a wide array of amazing books that you can order from their site: http://www.fantagraphics.com/recent/bks.html
If i had any money i'd order them myself. alot of them sound like great stories.

yeah, so about the whole "try to post something as frequently as possible" art-wise.... eff it.
I've realized i have a lot to do this month before the christmas break, and a small space of time to do it in. so it looks like most of my talent will be going into presentations, essays, projects, and christmas cards. plus i'm doing some small commission work.
but if ido get a free moment to think of something funny to do a comic about, i'll try to squeeze it in. but in the mean-time, anyone have any time-managing tips? cuz i could really use some.

hoo-ray. i have my computer back. but there's nothing to post. i feel bad i haven't posted anything for a while. i hate seeing my site and looking at just words.
i've been making all my christmas cards this year out of watercolour and ink so that's why i haven't done any new comics or other paintings. i'll post a finished card when it's closer to christmas.
but because i feel i've let you down, i'll post a one-frame comic tomorrow. and from now on i'll try to have something new up here as frequently as possible.

sigh............
My computer and i have always had this love/hate relationship. well now it's just hate.
it decided to stop working on me yesterday and now something inside is kaputz and it won't start.
so i am currently in the library, wishing i could post a comic about my shitty computer, but i can't.
so now i gently weep at the loss of my crap-ass CPU, and hope i can produce so much artwork to scan by the time it gets fixed, that it'll blow up again.
i'll post something as soon as i can, cuz i know you're all dying to get a fix of me (not), and you will shortly start the withdrawl process, which i might add, is extremely painful.
i'm totally kidding, it'll only hurt a bit.

Yesterday was Remembrance Day. Hope y'all wore your poppies and took a moment of silence to remember our fallen hereos.
I went to the market yesterday before going to the Knight's game and had coffee and drew a picture of a soldier, surorunded by a cross and poppies. maybe i'll post it later. anyways, the entire time i was drawing this picture i was kicking myself for not doing it earlier, because then i could've walked up to a random veteran, and given it to them. Y'know one of those senseless acts of beauty things. Well it was too late by then cause there weren't any veterens around to give it to, just crazy hockey folk. maybe i'll give it to my g-pa. he's a veteran.
That's all for now. nothing too special to report about. I gotta make a new comic for the school paper by tuesday, and the christmas comic is coming along nicely, i've never finished more pages of a comic in my life!

I'll have da special
i was sick today. that was not fun.
On monday night i had the opportunity to meet one of my favourite illustrators, Kean Soo. For those of you who don't know who he is, he an artist who lives in Toronto and has had comics published in both volumes of the graphic novel, FLIGHT (www.flightcomics.com). He also has a website where he ran a comic journal about his life for the year of and around 2003 and also has a bunch of autobiographical shorts set to music (www.keaner.net). His current on-running comic is Jellaby which is about a little girl who finds a big purple monster thing. it can be found at http://www.secretfriendsociety.com/.
He and another comicker Ryan North were presenting at macmaster university in hamilton as a part of a series called the "creator series". They were discussing comics online and in print, and the pros and cons of both. Ryan North's site is www.qwantz.com. his comic is very unique, in that the pictures never change but the text is different everyday.
wow long post, but i was so happy to meet one of my idols! I just had to tell you all!

I've decided that since it's close to that time of year again, when the snow falls and the clouds decide to stay, I would get myself into that romantic wintery mood by making a comic with the same kind of lovey theme, with pathetic fallacy to the max.
I won't divulge too much information at this time about the plot, but it's basically about a lot of really interesting human situations... or whatever. I hope to have it done around christmas, but if you know me, christmas = three years from next july.
this is the cover image and a title that is subject to change as the story unfolds.

Saint Simon
well everyone, it has been a great summer. good luck to you all this school year, and I'll see you in the halls.
It's been undeniably dear to me, I don't know why
When every other part of life seemed locked behind shutters
I knew the worthless dregs we are,
The selfless, loving saints we are,
The melting, sliding dice we've always been.
